Inspired by the stories of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is classic farce meets vaudeville, slapstick comedy all mixed up with satirical humor about romantic love and social class. The show tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. One of the funniest musicals ever written, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is witty and irreverent, full of situations and humor people have been laughing at for thousands of years. The music and lyrics, starting with the rousing "Comedy Tonight," are by a young Stephen Sondheim.
(Parent advisory. This show includes sexual humor and situations, but nothing more graphic than is commonly seen on prime-time television.)
